About BankAxept

BankAxept is Norway's national debit card scheme, jointly owned by Norwegian banks. Most Norwegian bank cards are co-badged BankAxept/Visa or BankAxept/Mastercard. BankAxept is the lower-cost domestic-routing option preferred by Norwegian merchants. Surfboard supports BankAxept across every in-store channel.

When to enable BankAxept

Recommended for every merchant operating in Norway. Routing through BankAxept rather than Visa/Mastercard typically reduces interchange fees on domestic Norwegian transactions.

Customer base

Norwegian consumers — virtually all banked adults hold a BankAxept-enabled card.

What merchants build with BankAxept

How to accept BankAxept on Surfboard

BankAxept runs on the same Payment Methods system as every other method on Surfboard. Enable it per merchant, store, or terminal — through the portal or the API, no re-deployment required.

1

Enable in the portal or via API

Partners flip BankAxept on for their merchants in the Partner Portal, merchants enable it for their own stores in the Merchant Portal, and developers can do the same programmatically through the Payment Methods API. Surfboard handles scheme registration where required.

2

Available everywhere

Becomes available immediately on the channels BankAxept supports — in-store terminals, online checkout, SoftPOS, and unattended where applicable.

3

One settlement

BankAxept transactions roll into the same settlement reports as every other payment method on the platform — no separate reconciliation pipeline.
